Today ends the magnificent two day weekend where Mark and I stayed home thanks to Typhoon Sinlaku. This is like the third typhoon that's hit Taiwan since we got here in May. It was pretty calm today with rain, which teetered between vicious spitting and light steady rain. Would have liked to have gone out to watch Hellboy II (elves!) but I don't think that the buses were even on.

Yesterday was fun. Wind that rattled the windows, heavy foggy rain that gave us about fifty meters of visilbity before the world dissapeared in mist.

Also caught up on the household chores. Ick.

Will have to go out tomorrow, rain or shine. Need a few essentials that I forgot to stock up on, plus work to go to after lunch.

Just downloaded a movie and watched it. The Fall is a fantasy movie along the tradition of Big Fish and The Fountain. It incorporates actual story-telling that gradually bleeds into reality, ultimately binding and healing the story-teller, the listener, and the characters in the story itself. The year is 1920 and Roy Walker, a stuntman, is in hospital after injuring himself in a shoot. Alexandria is a little girl with a broken arm who visits him. Depressed, Roy starts telling Alexandria an epic tale, and convinces her to steal morphine for him. The film uses stunning natural scenery that is sometimes bleak but is no less beautiful. Eastern architecture and motifs are also used for an exotic atmosphere.

In other news, my own writing is suffering by two elves frolicking in my headspace. One is Carncarca, no surprise to those in the know, in his WoW incarnation. One page is written and it is painfully trite. May type it up if I can pull myself from WoW long enough.

Speaking of the elf, Level 62 and rising! The lvl 70 cap is within reach!

Update of many topics
04:28pm 29/08/2008
 Travel and job update:
Still in Taiwan, still sorta jobless. Have been making friends with Mark's workmates at the school, going out for lunches and dinners. So much tasty food. Mmmmm.

Had an interview this morning. It would be good for me that job, since its like 4 days a week. However the intervieer said they were after Native speakers. I technically count as a native English speaker, only that I was born and raised in an Asian country before moving to New Zealand and Australia. We'll see by next week, I guess.

Writing update:
There's a book somewhere in me. I've been writting short drabbles and doing some brainstorms for it. Got my characters down, though Lead Male has trouble keeping his name. I keep wanting to call him Aegyptus, which is the name I gave him when he was my Ars Magica character. So far it's changed to Childe Wynde, then to Aegis. Since Aegyptus was a warrior mage, Aegis doesn't exactly match his personaltiy. And before you ask, no, I can't use "Aegyptus" since that's a geography-centric name, and this is a throughly fantasy world I'm creating.

Magic and science in the 18th century will be my overall theme. Mmm hats and petticotes and nation building. Fun stuff.

Dragon update:
One hatchling has matured! Yay!

World of Warcraft update:
Level 59! My paladin is Level 59! That's 11 levels from the lvl 70 cap. w00t! Next level he'll get the quest for his Epic Warcharger. Fast horse ftw. I'm currentlly grinding the player vs. player battlegrounds for honor points earned to purchase a quite decent weapon for him, but that shouldn't take more than a week.

Dwaggin edit: My dragons matured and are all adults! Yay! *jigs*

Mated Ishiyo and Neerav to create...

You know what? I think it's about time I updated this thing.

Lets see if I can do a month by month summary.

November: Work sent me down to Melbourne for three nights. Despite that it was one and half days of intense team-meeting and training, I treated it like a mini free holiday. I got to meet [info]not_in_denial and [info]kirby1024 and treated them to Max Brenner. I've known Erin for yonks, it was good to meet him.

December: I got married (thanks for all the wellwishers, btw. I love you guys too), moved out of home, and my sister-in-law dropped another baby boy. You think I'm being crude, right? She gave birth standing up (not by choice), so yes, she literally dropped him.

January to May: Preparation for busy stuff.

May: Busy stuff happens.

The long version? It started Monday 2345, and after an eight hour flight, Mr Sweetfires and I landed in Singapore. Terminal III of Changi Airport is massive, the hub of which resembles more a shopping mall than a major airport. I bought a shiny bracelet. It pretty.

Two and a bit hours later, we embarked on the last leg of our journey.

I'm currently in Taipei, capital of Taiwan, and I'm going to be spending at least a year here.

Well, that's the plan, anyway. We're currentlly in a hotel which is mostly free, and on Monday we start training to learn how to Teach English. We'll be assessed after training to confirm acceptance. Until then, we're trying to find our way around a city in which English is not a major language. Its not so much of a culture shock for me, but it's hitting the hubby dude a bit. He's getting by, and it's easing by now. The road naming system is so hideously different from anything either Mark and I have encountered, that we get lost while walking down a straight line over a couple of blocks. The street signs are, thank God, written in both Chinese characters and Pinyin, which is Chinese characters in Romanized form.

The food is fantastic, though. We are getting along by survivng on our Lonely Planet Taiwan book, and the Mandarin Phrasebook of the same publising company. Our accents are horrible enough that we elicit confused expressions and instead point to the phrase in the books. The locals are friendly though, quite willing to point out a good noodle shop and tea bar. Food on the streets is cheap. Foods in restaurants a bit more expensive. We had yamcha (dimsam) for brunch and walked out about A$30 poorer. A similar meal in Brisbane would be about A$10 to A$20 more expensive. We bought a steam pork bun (bao) for less than A$1.00, and from a 7-11 we got two drinks, a small Pringles can, and a box of Pocky for a bit over A$3.00. Two bowls of beef noodle soup was about A$6.50. That price would be doubled in Australia.

Tomorrow we're going to brave the train system to get to the suburb where hubby-guy's going to be posted. Then we'll go meet up with [info]dustthouart(whom I just met on the Catholicism community site) and we'll go explore a nightmarket. I think we'll go visit the zoo on Friday.

So I'm, like, getting married tomorrow.

Or later today, according to the time.

People kept asking if I were nervous, and I'm like "Eh, it's just another day."

T-11 hours and counting.

:D

Melbourne
12:13pm 09/11/2007
 I can't believe I haven't posted this yet.

Work is sending me down to Melbourne for a team meeting next week. I'll be there Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, flying back to Brissy on Wed evening. I'll be free after 5 the two nights I'm there.

Melbournites, who's up for a meet up? I'm looking at the Max Brenner menu and I'm keen to give it a try, if only by myself.

Also, according to my diary, it is 22 days to W-Day. wah!

Some rat bastard gave me World of Warcraft.

I now have five characters on two servers.

Two Alliance girls on Draenor, and three Horde boys on Argent Dawn. Alliance girls are a Night Elf and a Draenei, Horde boys are all Blood Elves (so pretty). A Paladin, a Hunter, and a Warlock.

I no longer have a life.

Hey look at that layer of dust! Its been, like, months!

I've been busy, I guess. Well, okay, lazy too, but busy mostly. The next three months will be busier, me thinks. Last Thursday Mark and I went for a job interview with a recruitment company to teach English in Japan. We'll hear back from them before Thursday next week. So, saving.

Also we've set a date to get married on Dec 1st.

Things I have done:

 • Booked ceremony

 • Booked reception

 • Got a dress

 • Perfected invitation design

 • Written out the invitation list

 • Chosen the wedding colours - white and gold

 • Purchased a whole bunch of disposable cameras

Things I've yet to do:

 • Get the flowers

 • Get flowergirl dresses

 • Get the bridesmaids' dresses

 • Book a cake

 • Get the rings

 • Send out the invitations

 • Get me some shoes that won't clash with mah dress

 • Choose the music for the ceremony

 • Book Mark and bestman's suits

 • Write place cards

I'm sure that there's more to that list.

Also, various conversations I've had with my parents and Mark:

Mum: Why aren't our names on the invitations?
Me: Because I'm paying for the thing.
Mum: Our names should be there! It shows respect!
Me: Pfft. Whatever. *adjusts wording on invitations*

Dad: Mark's parent's names should go first.
Me: What?
Dad: *brandishes the invite of a cousin about to be married this year like the writ of all that is right and proper for a wedding*
Because they did it like that here.
Me: Bah. *dosen't do anything about the invites*

Mum: What about the flowers?
Me: I'm looking at silk flowers, white roses and maybe some yellow ones.
Mum: Roses are nice. So are peach roses.
Me: No. My colours are white and gold. Yellow will do.
Mum: Ergh. *makes a face at yellow*
So how about the church flowers. Peach is nice.
Me: *aneurysm*

Mark: *inspect brochure on wedding provided by the church*
It says here that our rings are blessed.
Me: Yeah?
Mark: Does that mean I can fight demons with them?
Me:....Yes.
Mark: ^_^

Stay tuned for more marriage plan madness!
